Terms of Use

These terms are the agreement between you and Vitor Moura, an individual, developer of the game Rift Guardians ("we"). By installing the game or creating the online account, you agree to them and to the Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the game.

If you are under 18, only use the game after your parent or guardian has read these terms and agreed.

This is a translation of the Portuguese version. If the two differ, the Portuguese version prevails.

1. The game is free

• Rift Guardians is free. There are no purchases with real money in the game, and no ads.
• Currencies, items, commanders, guardians and skins are part of the game: they are only earned by playing, have no monetary value, and cannot be sold, exchanged for money or transferred to another account.

2. What you may do with the game

You receive a personal, free, non-exclusive licence to install and play Rift Guardians on your computers.

You may:

• play, alone or online;
• record and publish videos, streams and images of the game, including with monetization of your channel.

You may not:

• sell the game or charge for access to it;
• distribute modified copies, or distribute the game as if it were yours;
• modify the game, its memory or its communication with the server to gain an advantage, deceive the server or harm other players;
• use the game server for any purpose other than playing (for example, overloading, probing or attacking the server).

The game, its name, logo, art, sounds and texts belong to the author. Third-party tools and components have their own licences, listed in Credits and licences.

3. The online account

• The online account is optional. Without it, the campaign works on your computer.
• The account is created with no e-mail and no password: the game generates a key that is stored on your computer, encrypted for your Windows user.
• The account is tied to that computer and that Windows user. If you reinstall Windows, switch computers, delete the game's data folder or lose access to the Windows user, the online account cannot be recovered today, and we have no way of giving it back. We intend to offer transfer and recovery codes in the future, but they do not exist yet and we promise no date.
• One account per person is what we expect. The account is yours: do not sell it, lend it or buy someone else's.
• You can delete the account whenever you want, inside the game (Settings → Online account). Deletion is final.

4. Conduct

The Code of Conduct applies. In short:

• Names: your display name may not be offensive, discriminatory, sexual or threatening, may not impersonate another person or the game's team, and may not contain personal data or advertising.
• Cheating: tampering with the game, using programs that play for you in PvP, forging results or deliberately exploiting bugs is forbidden. The server replays matches to check the results.
• PvP: do not abandon matches on purpose, do not fix results, and do not use pause requests or emotes to disrupt your rival.

5. What we may do

To keep the game working and fair, we may:

• replace a display name that breaks the rules with a neutral name;
• refuse stages and matches that do not check out, and undo progress or rewards obtained by cheating or through a bug in the game;
• limit, suspend or close accounts that break these terms, in proportion to how serious it is. In serious cases — cheating, attacking the server, harassment — this may happen without prior notice;
• apply automatic waiting times in the PvP queue to players who abandon matches;
• change the game: rules, balance, rewards, modes. Updates that change the rules may be mandatory for playing online;
• reset progress during the testing period. If that is going to happen, we will announce it beforehand in the game and on this site;
• pause, limit or shut down the online service, for maintenance, overcrowding, lack of resources or by our own decision.

If you think an action against your account was a mistake, write to contato@riftguardians.tech with your friend code. A person reads and answers.

6. No guarantee of availability

Let us be direct: this is a free game, made and maintained by one person, on a small server.

• The game is offered as is. We do our best to make it work well, but it may have bugs.
• We do not guarantee that the server will always be up, that there will be no queues, or that the online service will exist forever. When the server is down, the campaign remains playable and what you play is sent later.
• We make backups, but we do not guarantee that progress will never be lost.
• If the online service is shut down for good, we will do our best to give advance notice on this site and in the game.
• Windows shows a warning when you open the game because it has no digital signature. We explain this in The Windows warning. Only download the game from the official addresses on the Download page.

Because the game is free, we are not liable for indirect losses, such as lost play time or progress. Nothing in these terms takes away rights that the law guarantees you and that cannot be waived by contract.

7. Third-party services

The download is hosted by itch.io and GitHub, and the community lives on Discord. Those services have their own terms and policies, and we are not responsible for them. You do not need an account on any of them to play.

8. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. The version and date are at the bottom of the page; important changes will be announced in the game and in the News. If you do not agree with a change, you can stop using the game and delete your account.

9. Governing law and contact

These terms follow the laws of Brazil.
